Before
I came to the United States to go to school, I worked for an organization
in Kenya that helped take care of the homeless youths in Nairobi.
In the last few years, different organizations and the Government have
come out to try and meet the needs of the homeless people and poor young
adults, but the number of the youths has been on the increase. The youths
have ended up in the streets of Nairobi and other small cities in Kenya.
They never learned any trade to find employment. Their parents have either
died of HIV-AIDS, cannot afford to take care of them, or the youths are
from broken homes.
On the right is one of the Streets in Nairobi. Most of the street kids spend
most of the time during the day in the streets like this one to beg for
money to by food for themselves and to help the rest of their families. There are
always many people walking in the streets. Nairobi enjoys the mass visit by most of the people
from the East African countries for it's spacious buildings, and the
hospitality of the people.
Some of the homeless kids in Nairobi we worked with last summer experienced
the rare opportunity to take a shower. They don't get to do that a lot
on the streets as much of their time is spent looking for food. Cleaning
jobs are very common (sweep around the kiosks) so that they may earn
themselves some money for food. Sometimes if they don't get a cleaning
job they are forced to eat from the garbage dump.
Pictured on the right is a matatu. Matatus are a very familiar means
of transportation. But sometimes it is a little bit uncomfortable for
someone who is used to much space around them. No matter what,
there is always room for one more person. They will find a way for you
to get in too. Make sure you get a Matatu ride while visiting Nairobi.
I will help you go through the experience.
